The Fisher Poets Gathering

The Fisher Poets Gathering is an annual event held on the last weekend of February in Astoria, Oregon, where men and women somehow tied to the fishing industry get together to share their poems, tales, and songs in celebration of the lifestyle and its people. Begun in 1998 with a few far-flung friends meeting in a pub, FPG has greatly expanded and now attracts around 60-70 artists and hundreds of audience members. It has been featured on the Today Show, in Smithsonian Magazine, and is the subject of a documentary film by Jen Winston, called "Fisher Poets." (Smithsonian article, click here)
Jay Speakman, Diane's husband and also owner of Sesame and Lilies, helps run this wonderful event and performs throughout the weekend. Though the main events take place at various locations in Astoria, bard fishermen (and whatever you call the women who do the same jobs) will be plying up and down the coast in search of audiences and free drinks.
To get a taste of the music you can download Jay and John's last album (mp3 computer friendly format) here.
